Need some good old fashioned strategy? You've come to the right place! Here you learn about team tactics and defending against different types of Pokemon, etc... I'll start with the basics.
Although some of this page is self-explanatory, I'll explain it anyway. You should compose a team 6 (the maximum amount) of Pokemon and let others be transfered to the PC. This team should be leveled evenly, plus or minus a level or two. Of this team, you should include Pokemon to handle/counter different types of Pokemon; you'll be prepared. To learn how to do this, read on. I suggest a team like this: Bulbasaur, Pikachu, Rattata, Pidgey, Butterfree, and Dugtrio. Eventually mold and evolve your team to: Venusaur, Raichu, Fearow, Dugtrio, Alakazam, Flareon. Of course you can base your team off the Pokemon you personally chose from Oak, like so. (keep in mind, all of this here is up to you, it is to give you a guide idea of how to use strategy)Chose Squirtle | Chose Bulbasaur | Chose Charmander |
---|---|---|

I said in the Game Info section that the Pokemon types form a "rock, paper, scissors" effect, for example: water beats fire, fire beats grass, grass beats water. So therefore, no Pokemon has specific advantages over all other Pokemon. I said there was more to the chain also. Here is the types advantages/disadvantages chart:
Normal | Fire | Water | Electric | Grass | Ice | Fighting | Poison | Ground | Flying | Psychic | Bug | Rock | Ghost | Dragon | |

This information can be used to your advantage in combat by matching your Pokemon to your opponent's disadvantage. This is one of the best forms of strategy in Pokemon. This is not the best table, so I would tear out the one in your instruction manual that came with your game. It is small, portable, and has greater clarity than the one above. If for some reason you don't have a Type chart from your manual you can print it out (along with all other pages on this site). But keep please give me credit and pass this site's URL to a friend. Spread the word! Anyway, back to the strategy. Here is a prime strategy example: Your opponent uses a Geodude. It is to your advantage to unleash a grass/water Pokemon out. It is quite simple once you use the chart a time or two.
Evolution information. Some Pokemon evolve from ordinary growing of level. Some require a special stone to evolve. These are noted in the Pokedex. Some need to be traded with a friend via game link cable to evolve. There are 5 types of stones: Moon, Fire, Leaf, Water, Thunder. All except the Moon Stone can be bought at the Celadon City Pokemart for $2100. Here is a special evolution chart:
